Daybreak Youth Services Review

Daybreak Youth Services is a nonprofit residential and outpatient treatment organization with locations in Spokane and Brush Prairie, Washington. Daybreak offers inpatient, outpatient, detox and acute mental health treatment to youth between the ages of 12 and 18.

Founded by members of the Presbyterian Church in Spokane in 1978, Daybreak began as an outpatient program offering support for students who had been expelled from school. The inpatient program began in 1984 and an additional residential facility was established in Vancouver in 1999. The Vancouver outpatient program was launched in 2012. In 2017, Daybreak opened the RWC Center for Adolescent Recovery, which offers inpatient, outpatient, co-occurring mental health and acute psychiatric care.

Accommodations and Food

The facility in Spokane features 16 inpatient beds for girls, while the facility in Brush Prairie has 58 gender specific inpatient beds. Rooms are furnished with dressers and side-tables. Linens are provided and clients are able to decorate their areas with personal items. Smoking is strictly prohibited.

Meals are prepared on-site by kitchen staff and served in a communal dining room. Dietary restrictions are accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

Each client receives individualized treatment. Length of stay varies based on the client’s initial assessment. Daybreak’s treatment philosophy is guided by dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) which is integrated into daily activities like school, recreation and group therapy. Clients receive tutoring according to individual academic needs, behavioral skills training, and are involved in light chores (such as keeping their room tidy and helping with meal clean up).

The treatment program includes one-on-one counseling, group therapy and skills training groups. Subjects include topics relevant to adolescents: self-esteem, gender specific issues, emotional regulation and stress management.

Daybreak provides outpatient services for clients whose assessment qualifies them for less restrictive treatment. Sessions are scheduled after school and on weekends. Group sizes vary, as does the length of treatment.

Extras

Clients have access to fitness activities including basketball, CrossFit and yoga. Offerings vary by location.

In Summary

Daybreak Youth Services offers adolescents in Washington state an excellent treatment program. The highly structured and individualized program allows clients to maintain academic progress, as well as form a strong foundation for recovery.
