Cornerstone of Rhinebeck dreamstimeCornerstone of Rhinebeck Review

Cornerstone of Rhinebeck is the newest addition to the Cornerstone Treatment Facilities Network, providing detox and residential treatment at a state-of-the-art facility located in a tranquil setting in beautiful Dutchess County, New York. Nestled in the Hudson Valley with views of the Catskill Mountains, Cornerstone of Rhinebeck has become one of the premier providers of substance abuse treatment in New York State.

Accommodations and Food

The 96-bed co-ed facility in Rhinebeck accommodates adults 18 years of age and older. With views of the Catskills and minutes from the Hudson River, this picturesque community is a peaceful setting for healing and recovery. The facility is a two-story stone and stucco house, surrounded by acres of rolling green and hiking trails. There are four residents to a room and furnishings are homey and cozy. Twin beds with bookshelf headboards, nightstands and shared closets and dressers make up the décor. Each room has a full bathroom attached. There is a large entertainment room on the first floor, along with the dining room, kitchen, counseling offices and nurses station. Staff prepares meals and certain dietary requests can be granted. A salad bar option is offered at lunch and dinner.

Treatment and Staff

Cornerstone of Rhinebeck is a 28-day, comprehensive treatment facility providing services to men and women in the Hudson Valley and surrounding counties. There is a 10-bed detox unit on the first floor but it is limited to light withdrawals. Clients requiring heavy detox or other serious medical intervention are either referred to a local hospital or to Cornerstone’s sister facility, the Medical Arts Center, in Fresh Meadows, almost two hours away, in Queens.

Treatment at Rhinebeck has been based on what is offered at the Medical Arts Center. Breakfast is at 7 am and the first group is at 9 am. Group therapy topics include health and wellness, anger management, gender specific groups, lectures, films and educational seminars and CBT. The gender specific groups are specifically designed for women, focusing on how addiction relates to self-esteem, co-dependent relationships, physical or sexual abuse and family issues. There is also an exercise group that takes place three times per week, consisting of yoga, stretching and Tai Chi. Clients are taken outside (weather permitting) three times a week for walks and hikes as opposed to staying on the unit, like the Medical Arts clients do. Weekly mandatory 12-step meetings are held on-site and clients are encouraged to get a sponsor. Any individual therapy or special family sessions are scheduled on as need basis.

The treatment team consists of Clinical Substance Abuse Counselors (CSACs), treatment technicians and nursing staff. There is a physician’s assistant on duty Monday through Friday until 6 pm, making for a client-to-staff ratio of seven-to-one.

Extras

As mentioned above, clients are treated to yoga and Tai Chi in addition to weekly walks and local hikes. There are also specialty groups for Spanish speaking people in their own language and focusing on cultural issues and addiction in relation to the Latino culture. In addition, Rhinebeck offers legal assistance to clients who have outstanding legal issues due to their substance abuse.

Upon discharge from Rhinebeck, clients are provided with an individual treatment plan for aftercare, typically consisting of follow up sessions with their counselor and attendance at 12-step meetings. Follow up lasts anywhere from four weeks to six months, depending on the client.

In Summary

Cornerstone of Rhinebeck is the less clinical option for residential treatment in the Cornerstone Network when compared with the Medical Arts Center. This means potential clients have choices based on preference and need. For those clients who aren’t plagued by co-occurring disorders, who don’t need a hospital setting and who prefer the idea of getting sober in the tranquility of nature, this could be the place. While the family program is less involved, there are specialty groups for women and Latinos and an aftercare program, making Cornerstone of Rhinebeck an attractive option for early recovery.
