Community Addiction Recovery Enterprise Review
The Community Addiction Recovery Enterprise, or CARE, program is operated by the Minnesota Department of Human Services in St. Peter, Minnesota. For the last 15 years, CARE has served individuals seeking treatment for substance abuse and dual diagnosis support in this small city about 60 miles south of Minneapolis. CARE programs include adult residential and outpatient treatment.
Accommodations and Food
The CARE residential facility is a 1,700-square-foot building located in a rural residential area in northwest St. Peter. The coed, single-floor building features 19 bedrooms. Each room has two beds; depending on the census, private rooms may be available.
The facility is separated into two gender-specific wings. There is a shared bathroom with a shower in each wing. Clients eat and do group activities together in a large rec room and an exercise room, where they can use yoga tapes or weights, is open during scheduled times of the day.
A food delivery service brings CARE clients three meals a day. Food allergies can be accommodated, but the ability to honor other special requests is limited.
Treatment and Staff
Clients come to CARE after receiving an outside assessment and referral from a doctor, detox facility or a parole or probation office. The six-week treatment program combines the 12-step model with traditional therapy. Medication management overseen by a consulting psychiatrist is available for those with co-occurring conditions.
Residents are required to attend on-site AA meetings daily. Therapy sessions and educational lectures on drug and alcohol abuse happen seven days a week. Individual therapy is typically twice a week for an hour. Group therapy sessions take place throughout the day, starting with a two-hour primary group first thing in the morning. There are between eight and 10 group participants at a time and two group sessions often run simultaneously. Specialized groups are offered for women and clients with co-occurring conditions. Relapse prevention is a focus of group therapy.
The outpatient program at CARE can be a step down from the inpatient program and is also appropriate for those who do not need the intensity of a residential program. Outpatient involves two or three two-hour weekly group therapy sessions. Individual therapy sessions take place weekly. The exact number of sessions and duration of treatment depends on the individual.
The on-site staff is a mix of licensed counselors and social workers. All staff members have experience in working with clients with a dual diagnosis.
Extras
CARE offers a family program every Thursday at the facility from 12:30 pm to 6:30 pm. This program includes comprehensive family group therapy and addiction education classes.
In Summary
Community Addiction Recovery Enterprise is a straightforward treatment facility. Affordable, 12 step-based treatment is the primary focus, while therapy helps clients work on the issues that contributed to their addiction.
