With more than 500 clients at a time, Choices of Louisiana aims to provide extremely affordable outpatient treatment for opiate addiction on a large scale. With facilities in LaPlace, Hammond and Alexandria, this recovery company covers quite a distance. While many outpatient programs focus on group therapy, Choices of Louisiana offers methadone maintenance and individual counseling for those dependent on heroin, Oxycontin and other Schedule II narcotics. Through medical and therapeutic support, clients can safely come off opiates once and for all.

Choices of Louisiana’s three locations for outpatient treatment are similar to one another, with each of them operating in a freestanding brick office space. The facilities include therapy rooms, offices, a lecture room and a medical examination room. There are designated smoking areas on the properties.

Both the LaPlace and Alexandria locations are approved by the state Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which oversees a variety of rehabs. The agency’s goal is to ensure quality care in addition to keeping costs down for taxpayers. Both clinics have received high marks from the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and were honored as Louisiana Addiction Service Provider of the Year in 2010.

Treatment and Staff

In order to participate in the program, clients must be willing to deal with the physical symptoms of withdrawal, provide one year of documented physical dependency to narcotics and prove that they can pay the monthly fees. Those who are pregnant, recently released from a penal institution or have a history of relapse will not be admitted.

Choices of Louisiana helps clients ages 18 and above from all socioeconomic, educational, racial and ethnic groups with opiate abuse. Under the care of medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists and counselors, clients undergo a medically assisted detox through medications such as methadone and Suboxone. In addition, individual and family therapy are offered as recovery tools. Typically, the program lasts for one year, although time can vary depending on the individual.

Upon entering the program, clients are assigned a primary counselor who oversees every aspect of treatment. All counseling is done on a one-to-one basis, happening once a week during the first 30 days, and then once a month after that. During this time, clients can discuss relationships, trauma, relapse prevention, abuse, life skills, legal issues, securing basic needs, anger management, parenting and employment. Behavior modification techniques such as CBT and DBT are used regularly. Clients who wish to take part in family therapy may do so with their primary therapist.

Client progress is tracked at a weekly patient care monitoring meeting. In this setting, staff members suggest specific tools, approaches and interventions for each client. Those who fail to meet treatment expectations are referred to a multi-disciplinary staffing meeting. While on-site AA/NA meetings are not offered, suggestions and referrals to outside 12-step fellowships can be provided.

In Summary

For those struggling to get off opiates, Choices of Louisiana offers a solid, incredibly inexpensive year-long program with both medical and therapeutic support. Although the therapy is quite infrequent, those who are looking for withdrawal support can find it here.
