Chemical Addictions Recovery Effort Review
Established in 1972, Chemical Addictions Recovery Effort (CARE) is a nonprofit that provides substance abuse treatment services for financially challenged adults and adolescents in Panama City, Florida. With an emphasis on the 12-steps, this rehab believes that a spiritual approach is integral to recovery. CARE offers A Woman’s Addiction Recovery Effort (AWARE), a long-term residential facility dedicated to helping women overcome the social stigma associated with addiction. Starting Over Straight (SOS) is an inpatient rehab for adolescents ages 13 to 18.
Accommodations and Food
Both SOS and AWARE are housed in residential homes in the rural outskirts of Panama City. AWARE has 13 beds and SOS has 14. Residents are paired up in dorm-style rooms with minimal furnishings. Clients at SOS are separated according to gender. CARE’s detox unit is a converted office space with a 15-bed capacity. Clients stay in gender-specific wards. There are six beds for men, five for women, three short-stay beds (for three-day clients) and one bed designated for an adolescent.
Residents at all facilities are served family-style meals in common dining rooms. While filet mignon won’t be on the menu, the staff follows basic dietary guidelines to ensure that everyone is served nutritious meals three times per day. Dietary restrictions are accommodated, if possible.
Treatment and Staff
CARE provides a variety of treatment options on a sliding scale to adults and teens suffering from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders.
CARE’s detox lasts between between three and nine days. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is provided, but the rehab refrains from using Suboxone and Vivitrol, sticking with medications such as Librium. Nurses and an on-call physician provide round-the-clock monitoring. The fee for detox is based on a sliding scale and depends on proof of income. Out-of-pocket cost ranges from $2 to $300 per day. Detox treatment includes group therapy, substance abuse education groups and attendance at 12-step meetings.
Treatment at the AWARE facility is generally 60 days and includes three to five group sessions per week, individual therapy, drug education classes and attendance at several AA/NA meetings off the premises. Group topics include relapse prevention, dual diagnosis support, Big Book study, substance abuse awareness, the disease model of addiction and coping skills. Besides learning how to use the 12 steps in their recovery, the women are given a safe place to discuss their personal issues and gain peer support.
The SOS protocol parallels that of AWARE with the exception that the teen clients are required to attend school and participate in a family program. Relatives and clients attend multifamily support groups. Treatment length at SOS varies per clients’ needs. After 30 days, residents are eligible for a home pass, which allows them to return to their family for an overnight visit.
CARE has Bachelor’s-level substance abuse counselors on staff as well as behavioral and medical service aides who help monitor the clients around the clock. SOS employs certified addiction counselors who specialize in adolescent treatment.
Extras
Weekly aftercare treatment includes one group session and continued attendance at 12-step meetings.
Drug court and DUI programs are offered for criminal justice and DUI clients. Drug court is a three-phase outpatient program and treatment lasts a year.
The rehab offers Alpha programs at local schools, which provide individual therapy to high-risk students from the fourth to the sixth grades. Prevention programs are also provided at local churches, hospitals and clubs.
CARE’s Drug Free Workplace is an educational seminar for employers and employees. The program focuses on substance abuse awareness in the workplace.
In Summary
This rehab lives up to its “CARE changes lives” motto by providing low-cost substance abuse and addiction treatment services to financially challenged clients. While their accommodations may be spartan at best, their traditional approach is great for clients seeking to integrate the 12 steps into their recovery.
