Chelsea Community Hospital Review

Located in Chelsea, Michigan, about 16 miles west of Ann Arbor, Chelsea Community Hospital (now merged with St. Joseph Mercy Health Systems) was founded in 1970 and today provides substance abuse, addiction and alcoholism outpatient treatment for adults 40 and older. Though it is affiliated with the hospital, the outpatient program is situated inside the Chelsea Clocktower Commons building to provide a more private environment for clients.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment begins with a 90-minute intake assessment, out of which comes an individualized treatment plan for each client. Typically, this includes 90-minute group sessions up to four times a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) and individual therapy once or twice a week. Chelsea doesn’t use a 12-step model, but instead focuses on traditional talk therapy. The program is designed for clients who have already completed inpatient treatment or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) elsewhere and who are currently in recovery. Its mission: to help these clients achieve long-lasting recovery while still taking  part in a full range of daily activities.

The facility doesn’t offer detox.  And though the hospital has a wing for individuals with mental health issues, it doesn’t treat co-occurring disorders.

The primary professional staff member, who holds a  Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW),  handles all evaluations, group and individual therapy.  And yet the staff-to-client ratio remains around one-to-four for the simple reason that rarely are more than four clients in outpatient treatment here at the same time. Referrals to other treatment facilities are readily made if the Chelsea staff determines a client needs more advanced or rigorous treatment.

Extras

Though it’s advertised for an over-40 population, in some cases people in their 30s are permitted to enter treatment predicated on the senior staff’s intake evaluation. But potential clients go to Brighton Hospital for detox and inpatient treatment and return to Chelsea for outpatient treatment.

In Summary

Chelsea is a good option for those over 40 in recovery who are looking for a structured outpatient program while maintaining other aspects of their daily lives. With small groups, individualized treatment and a qualified director, they can expect a modest but caring environment in which to continue recovery.
