Chabad Residential Treatment Center offers long-term, spiritually-based solutions for men suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues. Located in West Los Angeles, this facility has been serving the community for more than 40 years, blending the 12-step approach with the age-old values of the Jewish Torah. Although the program incorporates religion, men from all backgrounds are welcome, with the option to attend Jewish studies if they wish. Over the course of six months, clients are immersed in psychotherapy and spirituality, building a solid foundation for a life of sobriety.

Accommodations and Food

Located in a busy area of Los Angeles, this urban treatment center takes up an entire block of Olympic Boulevard. The 40-person program is split between two buildings, one for housing and the other for therapy. Basic bedrooms, which feature minimal furniture and a bathroom, are shared between two clients. The housing building also has a large cafeteria that provides a comfortable gathering space for meals. During free time, clients can gather for a movie in the common room. Once breakfast has been completed, clients walk over to the other building, where a handful of office spaces and therapy rooms can be found; most of the day is spent in this building.

During treatment, physical fitness becomes an important way of dealing with stress. While the facility does not have an on-site gym, clients can attend LA Fitness Sunday through Friday for two hours.

Clients don’t have to worry about cooking during their treatment; three meals a day are prepared and served on-site. The chef focuses on nutrition and dietary requests are accommodated on a case-by-case basis. Full-strength coffee and snacks are also available during the day.

Designated areas around the building can be used for smoking during breaks.

Treatment and Staff

Chabad Residential Treatment Center asks clients to commit to a six-month course of recovery, although this time frame is not mandatory. With a staff consisting of nine counselors and a consulting psychiatrist, clients are immersed in psychotherapy during their stay; therapies such as CBT and DBT are frequently used. Unfortunately, this facility does not offer detox, so medical stabilization must be done prior to admission.

Treatment involves individual therapy once a week, several hours of group therapy each day, optional Jewish studies, 12-step meetings and spirituality. Groups focusing on relapse prevention, anger management, processing and trauma allow the men to heal in a safe setting. Through the work done in the 12-step community, clients are exposed to others who understand the experience of addiction. While sponsorship in not required, it is an option.

Toward the end of their stay, clients work closely with a therapist on vocational goals and transition plans. Access to vocational resources and resume-building assistance are available.

Family members can participate in treatment every Sunday during family group, where they can be educated about addiction and have a chance to express their feelings. Family therapy sessions can be set up with the primary therapist on an as-needed basis.

In Summary

While healing in an urban environment can be difficult, Chabad Residential Treatment Program provides a spiritual sanctuary for recovery. By processing feelings and dedicating themselves to treatment, clients can find serenity in the City of Angels.
