The CentersThe Centers Review

“Rebuilding Hope” is the mantra of The Centers, a nonprofit organization in central Florida that’s been in operation since 1972. With a myriad of community support programs, mental health and acute care services, child welfare management and addiction treatment, The Centers is a multi-faceted entity readily accessible to those in need. Offering behavioral health services to an average of 13,000 citizens a year, they provide detoxresidential treatment and outpatient programs for substance abuse to both adults and adolescents.

Accommodations

The Centers technically has four locations in Citrus County and three locations in Marion County but the substance abuse services are offered on the three biggest campuses: the Airport Road Campus, which is home to a six-bed detox unit and the 50-bed adult residential treatment facility; the Martin Luther King campus, home to outpatient counseling for substance abuse, and the Lecanto Campus, which is home to the 15-bed adolescent residential facility and outpatient services.

The adult inpatient facility is called the Addie Rawls Recovery Center while the adolescent inpatient house is called Stepping Stones Recovery Center. Both are one-story buildings, reminiscent of stand-alone medical offices. Rooms are shared and the furnishings are far from luxurious, but safety and comfort are guaranteed. There is plenty of green space around both residential facilities for leg stretching between group sessions.

Treatment and Staff

A psychiatric assessment is conducted to decide where a potential client should enter the treatment cycle. Detox is available to adults only, at the Airport Road Campus, adjacent to the Addie Rawls Recovery Center. A doctor, registered nurses, social workers and mental health technicians monitor clients so that while they are safely withdrawing, the therapeutic process is already beginning. It is often at this stage that the need for dual diagnosis support is identified. The Centers recognizes the complexity of co-occurring disorders and the importance of integrated treatment.

If a client proceeds to the 30-day residential program, an individualized treatment plan is created with the intention of identifying the underlying issues that led to addictive behavior and developing a solid strategy for relapse prevention. Daily group therapy, weekly individual therapy, chemical dependency education and 12-step recovery are the key program elements. Group therapy topics cover a wide range of subjects including relationships, grief, trauma and health.

The adolescent program, for kids between the ages of 13 and 17 years, also begins with a psychiatric assessment and these residents remain in treatment for anywhere from six months to a year. Because of the extended length of this commitment, The Centers works alongside the school district, employing on-site tutors and certified teachers so academic requirements are met during treatment. Day-to-day programming is based around the Matrix Model, AA/NA, recreational group activities, intensive individual therapy, group therapy and substance abuse education as well as relapse prevention, aftercare planning and family therapy.

The outpatient treatment through The Centers also uses individualized treatment plans. Upon the initial evaluation, a plan is created over three group sessions in which the incoming client is educated about substance abuse and introduced to the therapeutic process. From there, clients attend group therapy and individual therapy sessions as needed.

The Centers staff includes over 550 medical professionals including doctors, nurses, mental health technicians and social workers as well as psychiatrists, therapists, case managers and substance abuse counselors.

Extras

Adults and adolescents in residential treatment have the benefit of experiential therapies like art and music therapy. Field trips and extracurricular activities are also built into the daily schedule, as is weekly family therapy.

The Centers also offers a lot of mental health resources beyond substance abuse treatment, including adult and children crisis stabilization and an adult psychiatric unit. This is an invaluable resource for many addicts and alcoholics with and without co-occurring disorders.

In Summary

The Centers accepts most health insurance and also offers sliding scale payment options. With multiple locations, the full continuum of care and specialized treatment for co-occurring disorders, they provide both comprehensive and affordable treatment for substance abuse issues. The extended length of the adolescent program allows kids to keep up with their schoolwork and could even prevent a longer battle with addiction later in life.
