Cayuga Addiction Recovery Services: Outpatient Review
Cayuga Addiction Recovery Services is a substance abuse treatment facility in Ithaca, New York. In the years since its founding in 1972, CARS has expanded to offer outpatient programming in Ithaca and residential treatment out of an additional facility in Trumansburg. CARS was created by a graduate student of Cornell University who wished to address the growing heroin epidemic in New York City. All therapeutic methods are adapted from the Matrix Model and treatment utilizes Hazelden materials. CARS also provides intervention services in addition to their outpatient and residential treatment programs.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient program at CARS was developed for clients in need of less intensive substance abuse treatment or a step down after completing a residential program. Clients aged 13 and up are accepted with services provided Monday through Friday from 9 am to 8 pm with flexible scheduling to accommodate work and family obligations. The outpatient program lasts for 12 weeks.
All clients are screened with a bio-psycho-social assessment by the clinical staff. Each client is also medically assessed to identify any additional mental or physical health concerns that may present themselves during treatment. If a client requires medication management and/or Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), they are seen by a psychiatrist and prescribed Suboxone or other appropriate medications.
All clients are treated using the Matrix Model. Counselors also utilize Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT techniques, 12-step methods, Contingency Management, the Brain Disease Model and relapse prevention. Clients attend group therapy sessions with LCSWs and CASAC. Groups specifically work on early recovery skills, relapse prevention and psycho-education. Clients may also receive couples and family therapy sessions to strengthen their home dynamics. Individual therapy is also provided through the client’s primary therapist. Clients use worksheets and private sessions to identify deeper issues and develop recovery goals. Regular drug testing is required.
Extras
A family program is available for families to become educated about substance abuse and assisting their loved one through recovery. Additionally, CARS works directly with the organization Challenge Workforce Solutions to provide clients with community-based vocational assistance in tandem with treatment.
In Summary
The Cayuga Addiction Recovery Services outpatient program is a 12-week track for clients who have completed a residential program or require less intensive treatment. Therapists utilize the Matrix Model approach as well as a range of other evidence based methods to identify and treat the causes and conditions of chemical dependency. Clients, their loved ones and family members are treated and given resources to begin again on the road to recovery.
