carbondale-treatment-centerCarbondale Treatment Center Review

Carbondale Treatment Center, one of several rehabs operated by the Gateway Foundation, provides gender-specific, residential treatment programs for chemical dependency. Located in southern Illinois, its campus has a lovely butterfly garden and winding walking paths, allowing clients to bask in nature as they go through recovery. While the 12 steps are offered, clients are able to take it or leave it; the focus of this program is more on therapy than on AA/NA.

Accommodations and Food

All Carbondale Treatment Center programs are housed in a large, single-level building resembling a high school. Each program has a 12-bed capacity, with spacious, dorm-like bedrooms that are shared between two clients and feature twin-sized beds, views of the campus, carpet, wooden dressers and desks. The building also contains offices, therapy rooms, a dining hall, recreational space and a lecture room. For fitness, a state-of-the-art gym equipped with treadmills and weight machines is available for use during free time.

Three meals a day are prepared on-site and served cafeteria-style. The buffet items change on a daily basis, but a fresh salad bar is always an option. Coffee is served with breakfast and healthy snacks are available in the afternoons. Smoking on-campus is permitted only during designated smoke breaks.

Treatment and Staff

Carbondale Treatment Center offers separate male and female residential programs, a dual diagnosis track for men only, and gender-specific treatment adolescents. All programs are highly individualized, focusing on the personal needs of each client. As a result, treatment time varies between 30 and 90 days. While a medically monitored detox is not available, clients can take part in a social detox.

The programs all follow similar structures. Clients are able to meet with their primary therapist at least once a week, although extra sessions can be added. Group therapy happens for several hours each day, with topics such as relapse prevention, anger management, self-esteem, codependency, nutrition, life skills, employment, processing and trauma.

Residents are also exposed to drug and alcohol education where they learn about the addiction-as-a-disease model. When it comes to the 12 steps, clients are able to attend an optional on-site AA/NA meeting once a week. Families may visit on the weekends, in addition to participating in individual therapy as needed.

When residential treatment has been completed, a variety of transitional care programs are offered including co-ed Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults, DUI treatment and adult aftercare services.

The staff includes counselors, therapists, a psychiatrist and nurses.

In Summary

Carbondale Treatment Center offers intimate programs geared toward substance abuse. With a strong emphasis on group therapy and individualized treatment, clients  can find a solid basis for recovery here.
