Camelot of Staten Island Inc. in Staten Island, NY is a New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS)-certified inpatient substance abuse treatment center that has been serving the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and of course Staten Island for more than 40 years. Founded by a longtime recovering addict, Camelot serves males between the ages of 13 and 18.
Accommodations and Food
The small, modern 24-bed facility generally accommodates six teens per room, though sleeping arrangements may be flexible. Bathrooms are shared by a number of people. A communal TV is situated in the downstairs lounge area. Cell phones, personal computers and other electronic devices are not allowed.
Meals are served in a cafeteria-style setting, and while the facility dietician aims for healthy food, there are also plenty that teens like—pizza, hamburgers, French fries and snacks.
Treatment and Staff
Camelot’s adolescent male facility offers off-site detox and also treats those suffering from dual diagnosis. The program addresses issues endemic to substance abuse in young adults, family relations and emotional and behavioral problems through individual, family, and group therapy. Clients are typically in the program for between six and nine months, during which time they attend classes at a nearby school located one block away. They return “home” for lunch and are required to complete homework after school before any recreation. Educational tutoring is also available on-site from high school teachers licensed by the New York City Department of Education.
On weekdays, group meetings starting at 6 pm run anywhere from one to three hours. Clients have more free time on weekends.
After 30 days of residential treatment, family visits can be arranged. Off-site overnight visits by residents are permitted when three months of treatment have been completed.
Extras
In addition to vocational services, Camelot has basketball and softball teams during the professional season and a nearby gym that clients can visit with chaperones.
When residential treatment is completed, alums typically participate in outpatient aftercare and family counseling for an additional six months to a year. Former clients are also encouraged to share their experiences with current residents by participating in informational meetings and events that are held regularly and overseen by professional staff.
