Broadway LodgeBroadway Lodge Review

The Broadway Lodge is the oldest 12-step provider in the UK with 40 years of experience since it opened in 1974. It is known for the wide array of addictions it treats (in addition to drugs and alcohol, gaming, tanning, exercise, shopping and Internet), as well as for its emphasis on both spiritual and medical solutions.

Located on the outskirts of the quiet seaside resort town Weston-super-Mare, Broadway Lodge is ideal for those seeking a facility away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Aside from the beach, which is often not accessible due to weather patterns that bring mud across the sand, Weston-super-Mare itself is a popular tourist destination for year-round activities, with its indoor ski slope, climbing wall, vertical wind tunnel and indoor sky-diving.

Accommodations and Food

Residents stay in a large, gothic home perched on the hillside. Accommodations have been designed to curb the loneliness of addiction, and to that end residents, there are up to four other residents per room, with a total capacity of 34. The rooms have storage space and comfortable bedding, but schedules at Broadway Lodge are so busy that clients should not expect to spend much time in them.

This facility has a common area with a television (used primarily for spiritual, educational and therapeutic DVDs rather than leisure), group therapy rooms and plenty of green space outside with picnic tables for outdoor relaxing (weather permitting).

As an alternative to the main facility, Broadway Lodge also has two separate residential facilities for gender-specific treatment. They have a women’s facility in Cardiff, Wales with 11 beds and a men’s facility in North Somerset, England, with 10 beds. Both of these facilities mirror the practices of the primary facility.

Broadway House serves three healthy meals a day off of a limited menu, though accommodations can be made for allergies. The meals are healthy and fresh, with lots of fruits and salads. Dinner often feature meat of some kind (such as fish) served with vegetables. Coffee is served during breaks throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment begins with a medically supervised detox (one to two weeks for alcohol, two to four for harder drugs) and an introduction to the rigorous program. This revolves around the 12 steps, with meetings both on-site and off-site (with staff transport and supervision). Individual therapy is available as well, with a variety of different approaches—among them are Gestalt, CBT, psychodynamic, humanist, person-centered and solution-focused therapies.

Group work also plays a major role here, and includes fellowship mutual aid meetings as well as general support and addiction groups. Likewise, there are workshops that focus on loss, bereavement, guilt and other abuse topics, as well as educational seminars centered on harm reduction, overdose risk, relapse prevention and sexual health. Broadway Lodge also treats dual diagnosis clients, and offers family therapy as well.

Treatment can last up to 12 weeks, and a typical day generally means rising at 7 am for breakfast, group meetings, a coffee break and various meetings or one-on-one sessions until lunch. After that, afternoons are full of more group therapy, educational therapy, alternative therapies and AA or NA followed by dinner and possibly one more group session. Treatment ends at 9 pm for the day, and lights out is at 11 pm. During breaks, residents may step outside, retreat to their rooms or call home.

Staff at Broadway includes two consultant psychiatrists, one general practitioner, one non-medical prescriber, 10 registered general nurses and 16 qualified health counselors. Staff are present 24 hours a day.

Clients may have visitors on Sunday, but staff must pre-approve. Broadway Lodge emphasizes abstinence and commitment, which means that one mistake—be it a relapse, violent outburst or a sexual interaction with another resident—means the end of a resident’s stay.

Extras

Alternative therapies include drumming, poetry, spiritual healing, Tai Chi, aerobics, art, acupuncture and aromatherapy. Broadway also offers a secondary program. This program maintains access to medical staff and psychological counseling, but also increases physical activity, builds life skills through planning meals, cleaning and doing laundry. They also offer vocational skills through classes at the local university, in subjects like information technology or food hygiene.

In Summary

Broadway Lodge offers both thorough and affordable treatment with a plethora of groups, alternative therapies and individual therapy models that ensure all residents have a good chance at recovery.
