Ben Gordon Center Review
Ben Gordon Center has been providing outpatient services for substance abuse and mental health issues since 1968. Located in DeKalb, Illinois, two hours outside Chicago, this facility has more than 40 counselors and therapists, many with specializations in addiction and mental health. The programs offered include outpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) for adults and adolescents and a sober living recovery home for women and their children.
Treatment and Staff
The Ben Gordon Center’s two-month IOP occurs three times a week for three hours at a time and is open to anybody. Adult groups meet separately from the adolescent program. The focus of IOP is mostly on group therapy, although clients do receive one individual session per week. Group size ranges from 10 to 20, with topics such as relapse prevention, trauma, life choices, self-empowerment and anger management. Group therapy sessions cost $90 per hour while each individual counseling session costs $120. Through intensive group therapy and evidence-based techniques such as CBT and DBT, a healthy mind and body becomes an attainable goal.
Once the IOP program has been completed, clients may choose to transition into the outpatient program. This involves a one-hour individual counseling session once a week and is intended for those whose sobriety has reached a stable point.
The Ben Gordon Center employs more than 50 counselors and therapists. They all have licenses and certifications in their areas of specialization, which include mental health, substance abuse, women, children, adolescents, couples and families.
Extras
In addition to the substance abuse outpatient programs, there are also services for vocational training and job placement, mental health groups and eating disorder treatment.
Discovery House, the recovery home for women and children operated by the Ben Gordon Center, can accommodate up to 13 women and children. Clients must be 18 or older, have completed a residential substance abuse treatment program, have at least 30 days of abstinence and have a child between the ages of two and 12. They are required to attend outpatient treatment at the Ben Gordon Center and the program cost is $8.25 per day, which includes meals and one group therapy session per week. Many of the women choose to participate in additional therapeutic services at the nearby main facility, but extra costs apply.

In addition, Discovery House gives women a chance to receive treatment without being separated from their children.
