The Beacon House Association of San PedroThe Beacon House Association of San Pedro Review

Founded in 1970 by Father Art Bartlett, a minister, and Michael Dowling, an alcoholic merchant seaman, The Beacon House Association of San Pedro has remained a non-profit inpatient treatment facility serving men addicted to alcohol and other substances. By providing gender-specific treatment, this program allows men to focus on issues that are pertinent to them such as community and brotherhood.

Accommodations and Food

Located on Beacon Street in the city of San Pedro, California, Beacon House faces the picturesque Port of Los Angeles. The house holds 18 primary residents who share rooms. There is a media room, a computer and a study room for those continuing their education. Three meals a day, which feature home-style cuisine, are planned and prepared by a staff food service.

Treatment And Staff

Treatment at The Beacon House is 12-step oriented and highly structured around daily meetings and group therapy. Men wake up at 6 am and have breakfast, which is followed by a morning walk, house chores and a group session. After lunch, residents attend more groups with various focuses—ranging from anger management and relapse prevention to preparing for transitional living. Days end with a 12-step meeting.

While there isn’t on-site detox, The Beacon House does offer outside referrals if necessary. The treatment model at The Beacon House focuses on abstinence, working the 12 steps and behavior modification. Once clients have gotten some sober time, they are encouraged to shift their focus from themselves to the community. Since being of service is often thought to be an integral part of long-term sobriety, The Beacon House men often volunteer to park cars at fundraisers, set up chairs at a charity auction or host a community breakfast. The Beacon House supports the community and themselves, whenever and wherever it is needed.

Staff at Beacon House is made up of certified addiction treatment counselors who are diverse in culture, education and life experience. They take pride in treating each individual with respect. There is a medical doctor on-site on Mondays.

Extras

Probably the most amazing thing about The Beacon House is that there is no time limit for a client’s stay and all treatment—including room and board—are free of charge. The Beacon House takes care to make sure their clients have career and education options open to them so they are prepared to re-enter the community as sober and self-supporting individuals where they’ll be able to contribute to society and stay connected to others. And while it all sounds too good to be true, their work in miracles hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Beacon House was voted “Best Non-Profit of 2013” by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews about non-profit organizations.

In Summary

The Beacon House provides a quiet residential atmosphere for men serious about long-term recovery. There are no frills here, just hard work. However, at The Beacon House, hard work pays off—in the past 40 years, Beacon House has assisted thousands of men in regaining their place in the community as responsible, productive and sober members.
