Bay Mills Behavioral Health Review
Located in Brimley, Michigan, Bay Mills Behavioral Health is an outpatient substance abuse treatment program located on the Bay Mills Indian Reservation. The Bay Mills Indian Community (BMIC) is a Chippewa Indian reservation that was granted mental health government funding in 1936. The rehabilitation program is offered to all Native American and non-Native American people, regardless of age or ability to pay.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Bay Mills is based on the 12 step principles of surrender and spirituality. Clients range from those seeking help for everything from substance abuse to depression, anxiety, anger management and eating disorders. Individual and group therapy are a daily regulation for those attending the outpatient program. An average day at Bay Mills is different for everyone. Treatment plans are highly individualized and subject to change depending on the progress of the individual.
Community is one of the main resources for recovery at Bay Mills. By utilizing a supportive and communal atmosphere, clients are better able to get in touch with themselves and nature. Nature is used as a force of healing through means such as Native American traditional activities, ceremonies and nature walks. An intensive family program is also part of the recovery process. Families are encouraged to attend at least one session a week.
The center does not offer detox, but makes referrals for those who need it. The staff at Bay Mills is composed of MFTs, a medical doctor and trained volunteers.

Bay Mills is set apart by its excellent relapse prevention and aftercare programs. They feel strongly that staying mentally healthy is more difficult than getting mentally healthy and that a proper program should always be put in place before discharge. This includes a certain amount of sober time, a well-rounded support system and opportunities to be of service to the community. In fact, Bay Mills’ focus on family and community is impressive. Clients are encouraged to let go of old ways of thinking and embrace a spiritual reality with those around them through meditation and mindfulness.
