avalon-centerAvalon Center Review

Avalon Center is a West Seattle outpatient center that was founded in 2007 by Diane Hutcheson, who wanted to create a facility to treat both chemical dependency and mental health issues. In 2008, the program was split into separate men and women’s tracks. Through individualized treatment, a highly trained staff and a supportive community, clients discover a new way of living.

Treatment and Staff

The Avalon Center offers separate Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and outpatient programs. Upon admission, clients have a psychiatric evaluation that addresses whether they are suitable for dual diagnosis support. The cost for the initial assessment is $150.

Intensive outpatient includes two group sessions and one individual session per week. After three months, the client steps down into outpatient, which includes one group therapy session per week and one individual per month. Each group and individual session costs $65.

The programs hold up to 10 clients at a time, utilizing evidence-based treatments such as CBT and DBT. The group therapy for men typically focuses on anger management, relapse prevention, employment, trauma, processing and family dynamics, while the women focus on self-esteem, shame, guilt, abuse, trauma, nutrition and parenting.

This facility also specializes in helping clients facing DUI, child custody, child dependency or other legal cases. The staff works closely with lawyers and medical professionals to formulate a proper plan of action. Many clients who have been arrested for DUIs come to this program for a DUI assessment. Avalon Center works with the client’s attorney to submit paperwork in a timely manner. The process typically takes five to seven days to complete.

Avalon School also offers an Alcohol and Drug Information School, an eight-hour class on the basics of addiction, alcohol abuse and DUI laws. These classes are offered on a regular basis in a group setting; individual classes can be arranged on case-to-case basis.

The staff includes a nurse practitioner and counselors.

Extras

When it comes to family involvement, Avalon Center provides ongoing support for family members in both a group and individual setting. A monthly free Family and Addiction series is ongoing and is open to the community.

As far as alternative healing modalities, this facility offers EMDR, Lifespan Integration (a body-based therapeutic method), hypnosis and energy psychology (a combination of Eastern approaches to the mind and body with Western psychology). These sessions are not included in the cost.

In Summary

Avalon Center provides an individualized, comprehensive outpatient program. Through group and individual therapy, clients can process their emotions in a safe space. With specialty services such as EDMR and energy psychology, a holistic approach to recovery can be explored.
