AMS of DelawareAMS of Delaware Review

AMS of Delaware provides medication- assisted treatment, Intensive Outpatient (IOP) treatment and outpatient substance abuse and mental health services for individuals in Delaware. The facility is part of Addiction Medical Solutions, a provider of addiction treatment services in Maryland, Delaware, Florida and Wisconsin. They believe that addiction is primarily a neurological disease and are committed to providing patients with high-quality care that enables them to regain hope in a supportive, caring environment. Dr. Thomas F. Kelly, who is AMS Delaware’s medical director, specializes in Suboxone treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Individualized treatment plans are provided for each client, based on personal and medical needs. New clients are typically able to enter their first phase of treatment within 48 hours of contacting AMS of Delaware. There are three levels of medication-assisted treatment to ease withdrawal from opiates or alcohol, an IOP program and an outpatient program.

The medication maintenance program is for long-term opiate addicts who are physically dependent on drugs and have opted for a clinical medication protocol rather than dangerous street drugs. Client and physician mutually decide on the choice of medication. AMS of Delaware prescribes both methadone and Subutex.

The maintenance-to-abstinence program helps participants move through medication-assisted treatment, with the goal of eventually abstaining from all illicit substances and opioid medications. Methadone or Subutex are prescribed as a key part of the program, which also includes individual and group therapy. This is a long-term program that typically takes about two years.

Medication-assisted detox is also offered, with clients being supervised by the staff physician. This program also provides access to group and individual therapy sessions.

The outpatient programs are designed for clients who do not require—or have completed—detox or residential treatment. Staff supervise the outpatient groups, which are offered Monday to Saturday between 6 am and 6 pm. Group topics include stress management, relapse prevention, post-acute withdrawal syndrome, anger management and spirituality. Clients also benefit from individual therapy and are introduced to 12-step programs. Family therapy groups are offered weekly. Client progress is assessed and monitored by clinical staff, continuing on into aftercare. While outpatient clients are required to attend one hour-long group and one hour-long individual session weekly, those in the IOP are required to do three hour-long group therapy sessions and an hour of individual therapy per week.

The staff consists of a physician, two nurses, several nursing assistants, counselors and social workers. All clinical staff members have alcohol and drug counselor certifications.

Extras

AMS of Delaware offers weekly family groups that provide education and support to the loved ones of clients in treatment. They also perform drug screens when required. With the client’s permission, the clinical staff provide information or coordination of treatment with their primary physician, therapist, labor union or employer.

In Summary

AMS of Delaware offers low-cost medication-assisted treatment and outpatient group and individual treatment. This can provide an affordable path to abstinence for those who are addicted to opiates. While the groups are primarily geared toward providing support to those transitioning out of opioid addiction, referrals are made for those individuals requiring dual-diagnosis support or a higher level of care.
