Alternative Options Counseling Center Review
Dr. George Bernier opened Alternative Options Counseling Center in 1992. As the president and clinical director, his vision was to use a multifaceted treatment approach for chemical dependency, eating disorders and mental health. His facilities offer an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), as well as dual diagnosis treatment. Alternative Options also provides IOP treatment to adolescents for eating disorders, substance abuse and mental health. Dr. Bernier is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been helping people overcome addiction for over 25 years.
The facilities are located in the Los Angeles-area cities of Cerritos, Huntington Beach and Placentia, and they accept most insurance coverage.
Treatment and Staff
The chemical dependency IOP program is a 45-day treatment protocol that includes group therapy, medication management and aftercare plans. The facility uses CBT as well as 12-step groups. All treatment plans are highly individualized and can be scheduled during the day or in the evenings to accommodate work and school schedules. The program treats all forms of drug addiction, from opiates to cocaine to alcohol.
The eating disorders IOP is also a 45-day program focused solely on helping people overcome eating disorders. The team of clinicians works closely with clients’ physicians to determine the best approach for care. Care includes CBT group therapy and individual therapy once or twice a week, psychoeducation groups, nutritional counseling, meals and snack support, self-esteem and body image groups, trauma group, art therapy, experiential therapy, a family nutrition group and medical evaluations and supervision.
Adults and adolescents in crisis can enroll in the PHP track, which meets for six hours, five days a week, with lunch included during the day. This is a short-term, highly structured environment for those who have severe symptoms—of chemical dependence, mental illness or both—which render them incapable of living their daily lives. PHP offers each client their own case manager who works with the treatment team to develop an individualized plan. The program also includes individual therapy, family therapy, psychoeducation groups, medical evaluation, CBT, drug testing, diagnostic testing and alcohol and drug education.
The treatment team of 26 staff members are all professionals with many years of experience treating addiction. The chemical dependency program has staff who have many years’ experience, and the medical director meets with each individual for a medication evaluation and medication management. The staff includes music and art therapists, a psychiatrist, addiction specialists, (MFTs, and dieticians.
Extras
Alternative Options offers psychotherapy for individuals, couples, families and children. Group therapy is also available for stress and anger management, as are classes in parenting. Therapists also perform psychological testing.
