Alexian Brothers Center for Addiction MedicineAlexian Brothers Center for Addiction Medicine Review

Illinois is known for a lot of things—food, libations, events and entertainment. They do everything big—including recovery. Out in Chicagoland’s Northwest suburbs, there’s an entire entity dedicated to rehabilitation—founded by the Alexian Brothers. For centuries, the Alexians have operated hospitals and sanitariums all over Europe. In 1866, their predecessors came to Chicago and opened their first American hospital on Belmont Street. In 1999, they acquired the Hoffman Estates hospital and today, this facility perpetuates the Alexian tradition of helping people by offering substance abuse services to those struggling with addiction.

Accommodations and Food

Though not technically a residential rehab, the Alexian Brothers Center for Addiction Medicine offers Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) for which they provide accommodations on the hospital campus. PHP clients are given quarters furnished with two twin-sized beds, each with an accompanying dresser. The opposite side of each room has two chair-and-desk sets divided by a large wardrobe.

Inside the main facility, a carpeted waiting room is furnished with multiple chairs for incoming clients, contemporary art on the walls and indoor plants. Clients can also enjoy the calm and Zen-like ambience of the Alexian healing garden outside. Flat stones pave the path amid large beds of annual flowers juxtaposed with perennial plants. Two benches sit opposite each other for those who wish to simply take in the serene surroundings. All this is enclosed by a tall planked fence that provides extra privacy. For those seeking a more spiritual setting, this facility provides a small chapel complete with miniature organ, chairs and stained-glass windows.

The on-site Moon Lake Café serves cafeteria-style food including sandwiches, various soups and hot meals (sugar and caffeine are allowed). There’s also a salad bar and vending machines for those who prefer something lighter. Clients enjoy their food while sitting in a high-ceiling dining area in front of large windows allowing health amounts of sunlight to fill the room. In the center, lush vegetation sprouts atop a padded, circular bench. All meals are provided for residential clients while those in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) are just treated to lunch.

Treatment and Staff

The Alexian Center for Addiction Medicine is a therapeutic environment that aims to stabilize and motivate those in recovery. Clients often start this journey in a three-to-five-day outpatient detox before moving into either PHP or IOP, both of which are founded in the 12 steps. Clients meet daily with their case managers and have psychiatric appointments once a week for dual diagnosis support. Therapy and educational classes are aimed at determining how mental health and addiction issues affect the whole person: mind, body and spirit. Group and individual therapy are based on CBT and Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Most clients remain in treatment between four and six weeks—two or three weeks for each component. Within the PHP phase, clients meet from 9 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday while IOP clients meet from 9 am to 1 pm Monday through Friday. Upon arriving for the day, clients check in and then participate in psycho-education groups. Afterward, they attend more group therapy followed by one-on-one sessions with their case manager and then experiential therapy. Lunch is provided for all clients. The facility also hosts weekly on-site 12-step meetings and encourages clients to attend additional off-site meetings, get sponsors and work the steps.

Alexian employs 12 associates and several physicians. All personnel are credentialed psychiatrists, expressive therapists or certified counselors.

Extras

Experiential therapies include art and music therapy, yoga and movement therapy and Tai Chi. There is also an on-site gym for the clients to use.

One night a week, Alexian hosts a family night where various topics are discussed, including addiction education, relapse prevention and family dynamics. Alumni are welcome to attend with their families as part of an aftercare program.

In addition to the PHP and IOP programs for adults, Alexian Brothers offers both programs for adolescents.

In Summary

The Alexian Brothers Center for Addiction Medicine is basically offering a version of residential treatment with its PHP program by providing short-term accommodations so clients have more freedom and less structure than they would in a typical residential program. Adults, adolescents and those suffering from co-occurring disorders could definitely find what they’re looking for here—a good family program and a range of experiential therapies accompanying a long history of service to the community.
