Adolescent Growth Review
Mid-range, affordable and based in the Los Angeles area, the Adolescent Growth treatment center opened in 2005 to treat young adults between the ages 0f 12 and 17, struggling with substance abuse, eating disorders and co-occurring disorders. Utilizing a multidisciplinary treatment team and a holistic approach to recovery, Adolescent Growth has three treatment centers, where trained facilitators specialize in incorporating spiritually based practices such as yoga and meditation with CBT.
Accommodations and Food
Two of the residential treatment centers are in Commerce—twin, two-story homes on a cul-de-sac, close to a neighborhood park. The Sherman Oaks house is similar in design, though it is a little larger. Clients share bedrooms (with one other person), bathrooms and chores. All three houses have a TV room, a classroom (for group therapy and clients continuing their education) and an office space for individual therapy. Each facility has a bright kitchen area, where clients learn to prepare and enjoy meals in a healthy way (especially critical for their residents with eating disorders).
Treatment and Staff
Adolescent Growth provides mental health and addiction services for teens with anxiety, depression, OCD, bipolar, mood management issues and other problems. Stays are a minimum of 45 days—this is often a step down from hospitalization, so there is no detox, and clients cannot be an immediate danger to themselves or others. Each client receives an individual treatment plan, which for most include DBT, CBT, daily physical fitness, group therapy and academic instruction. If appropriate, 12-step meetings are attended. Relapse prevention and participating in the alumni group is included in all treatment plans. There are specialized groups that focus on issues such as past trauma, cutting, anger management and art therapy.
Psychiatrists specializing in ongoing medication management work with those who take medication to manage depression and co-occurring disorders. The rest of the staff at Adolescent Growth is made up of licensed vocational nurses, licensed clinicians, licensed therapists, group therapists, academic facilitators and other trained professionals.
Extras
Based on the assessment of the treatment team, clients may also participate in expressive therapy that includes creative art, dance and music. Residents also participate in daily physical activity through a membership at LA Fitness gym.
Families participate in weekly/bi-weekly family therapy, parenting support groups, multi-family groups and parent restoration weekend workshops on Saturday and Sunday.
In Summary
Combining CBT, physical exercise and spiritual practices like yoga and meditation, Adolescent Growth focuses on a holistic treatment approach to healing and recovery. Though the website is comprehensive in scope, several attempts made to obtain more detailed information about the facility, including price point, were ineffective. But then parents might consider this shroud of secrecy a positive thing when considering treatment for a troubled child.
