Addiction Treatment Services Review
Addiction Treatment Services, an inpatient and outpatient recovery program for addicts and alcoholics, is situated in downtown Traverse City, on the shores of Lake Michigan. The goal of Addiction Treatment Services is to heal the addict holistically: through mind, body, spirit, and relationships. The team here believes that abstinence from alcohol and drugs is not enough to heal the addict, but that understanding trauma is the key to recovery.
Accommodations and Food
Traverse City is a resort community with a steady flow of tourists; so much of downtown is pedestrian-friendly. There are three main buildings: an outpatient facility, a men’s residential home, and a women’s residential home, all in walking distance of each other and plenty of coffee shops, stores, and restaurants.
The men’s and women’s residential homes are a mile apart. The men’s home has 18 beds, the women’s; room for 12. Both are spacious and traditional suburban homes, with front porches and big trees in the front yard. The beds in both houses are twin-sized and most rooms are double occupancy. Addiction Treatment Services puts major emphasis on community, so clients are involved with the daily operation of their houses. Clients acquire life skills simply by learning to live together, making meals and sharing space.
Treatment and Staff
Detox, located down the street from the men’s residential house, can accommodate 12 clients, who then generally move on to the inpatient program.
The impatient program typically lasts for 28 days, but longer stays are not uncommon. Again, this is not a 12-step oriented program; their recovery tools derive from evidence-based practices and research. This is gender specific treatment that focuses on healing past trauma and ongoing physical or mental health issues (co-occurring disorders). The program centers on life-skill building and experiential therapy. A lot of attention is devoted to opportunities for recreation, adventure, socializing and entertainment. Family are included in the recovery process, but their exposure to clients is managed closely; there are no allocated visiting hours during the week, but specific times when family are invited to participate in therapy.
Unlike other treatment centers that favor CBT over 12-step, there is no medical doctor or psychiatrist on staff. Addiction Treatment Services is managed by social workers. Visiting doctors and nurses; therapists and case managers make up the rest of the support staff.

Addiction Treatment Services believes in engaging socially with the local community—music, film and comedy festivals, water sports, the Farmers Market, coffee shops or going to the movies, clients are encouraged to experience Traverse City while in treatment.
In Summary
The location and accommodations of Addiction Treatment Services are no doubt grand, especially in warmer months. Yet it might be a red flag that the website goes into more detail about the attractions of its environs than the therapies it offers. Consider the contrast with the majority of treatment facilities that keep clients either exclusively on the grounds or under close watch—perhaps being less removed from real life like the clients are in Traverse City makes it easier to return home.
