Acadia Malibu Review

Acadia Malibu recently joined the pack of luxurious rehabs near one of America’s most beautiful beaches. It started out as a sober living facility, but recently began offering the Malibu Model rehab experiencehotel-like accommodations, professional chefs, solid amenities, a highly trained staff and a number of holistic treatment alternatives.

Accommodations and Food

Residential treatment in Malibu is basically the rehab dream. The accommodations are vacation-like, with floor-to-ceiling windows. The 30-person program houses clients in one of three residences. The spaces are large and plush, with flat-screen TVs in each of them, though no private rooms are available.

While each home features a full kitchen, clients rarely get a chance to use thema professional chef makes three gourmet meals a day. Menu items are healthy, well balanced and organic with enough variety and taste to keep things interesting. Coffee and snacks are available at certain times of the day and special needs are taken into account.

Treatment and Staff

Acadia Malibu has a strong treatment approach. The 30-to-90-day treatment begins with an on-site, medically monitored detox when needed. During this period, clients are housed in a six-bedroom home with around-the-clock care from doctors and nurses. This process usually lasts five to seven days, costing $2,500 per day. Once stabilization has been reached, clients begin a customized plan of action.

After an initial assessment is made, residents are assigned to a “care coach,” a CADC who meets with them twice a week. Through this relationship, the client’s progress and struggles can be closely monitored. Clients meet one-on-one with a Master’s-level therapist at least once a week. Family counseling is also an option.

Group therapy takes place several hours each day, focusing on topics such as relapse prevention, processing, trauma, codependency and grief. Therapeutic modalities such as EMDR, neurofeedback, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and somatic experiencing are used in both group and individual settings. Acadia has an easy-going approach to the 12 steps—if clients find AA/NA helpful, great; if not, that’s okay, too.

When the residential program has been completed, clients can transition into a sober living environment or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The outpatient program operates in the evening, freeing up days for work or school. Clients often reside in the Sober Living and attend outpatient simultaneously. The amount of time spent in these programs depends on the individual’s needs.

The staff includes a medical doctor, psychiatrists, nurses, counselors, therapists and recreational specialists.

Extras

Amenities are top of the line. An open, airy meditation and yoga studio provides space for self-exploration while a heated pool is just steps away. Those who need more action are taken daily to an off-site gym. Invigorating activities such as hiking, surfing, kayaking, martial arts and paddle boarding are also available. Spa treatments like massages and facials can be arranged on as-needed basis, but they are not included in the cost of treatment.

During their stay at Acadia Malibu, residents have access to a unique variety of activities such as a Native American sweat lodge, Zumba dance classes, gardening and volunteering in the community.

In Summary

Acadia Malibu has a lot to offer, with breathtaking views of the Pacific and some of the latest therapies. Like many of its competitors, the cost is high but its thorough treatment makes it more than just a luxurious escape.
