aar-counseling-servicesAAR Counseling Services Review

With two Florida locations just off the Gulf Coast, AAR Counseling Services offers individualized outpatient treatment services for chemical and behavioral addictions. People come to AAR for help with alcohol, drugs, food, gambling, sexual addiction and codependency. And although the specialty here is addiction, AAR counselors are also trained in anger management, couples counseling, domestic violence and grief.

The coast of Florida can be beautiful—white sand beaches, crystal blue waters. The city of Naples boasts grand architecture and world-class hotels; Fort Meyers is the gateway to the Southwest Florida region. Still, while AAR Counseling Services offices may be surrounded by beauty, they are nothing to brag about physically; the Naples facility is along an industrial parkway and the Fort Meyers branch is in an office complex. Both locations have separate rooms for group therapy and individual therapy, furnished with office chairs and tables; it’s obviously not about aesthetics.

Treatment and Staff

The staff at AAR believes that a number of treatment programs fail to initiate individualized treatment, and this may be one of the main reasons they tend to fail. AAR does offer classes on addiction studies and touches on the 12-step program of recovery, but this is not a 12-step program. AAR believes that addiction is an emotional phenomenon and that recovery is best achieved in more private, confidential settings. Individual care is the primary focus here—prolonged personal attention from a licensed professional.

The first step at AAR Counseling Services is an intake assessment with one of the experienced addiction counselors. Depending on the assessment, the client is assigned to an individual counselor and if appropriate, set up for group therapy. Groups vary in size, from 10 to 20 people, depending on the focus of the group (substance abuse, sex addiction, anger management, etc). Counselors are trained in a variety of therapeutic methods; the goal being to help each client uncover old pain, grief, fear and anger, rather than focusing on people or substances as a way to numb out. In order to accomplish this, counselors use Reality and Brief Therapy, Rational Emotive Therapy, CBT and DBT. Dual diagnosis support is available for clients who demonstrate acute anxiety and depression; AAR arranges outside psychiatric referrals when appropriate.

Services are available at AAR Monday through Friday during the day and evening. How long someone stays in treatment is largely up to them, but the thinking here is that lasting recovery requires a lasting treatment approach.

In Summary

AAR Counseling Services treats a broad range of addictions through individual therapy, supplemented by group treatment—the opposite to what most recovery programs are selling. Personal attention like this is great, especially when dealing with trauma and sexual abuse, but the value of a sober community shouldn’t be discounted. This could be a great place for people who aren’t ready to share their recovery just yet and prefer to begin their journeys in private.
